Electricity trading

Since the installation of its units, the Mátra power plant has been one of the most significant generating units of the Hungarian electricity system. It sells the self-generated electricity as authorised producer in accordance with the electricity producer authorisation issued in Decision 21/2003 of the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH) pursuant to Act LXXXVI of 2007 on Electric Energy.

About 85% of the fuel needed for the production is lignite from its own mines. This fuel supply from own mines ensures that the company has the constant resources needed mostly to regulate the residential profile, for increased demands and market expectations, while maintaining its stability for both the operation of the electricity system and for electricity purchasers.

The company's 2 gas turbines with an installed capacity of 33MW each participate mostly in the system-level services market.

Our company also possesses an electricity trade authorisation issued in Decision 42/2003 of the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH)

The authorisation has been in force since 1 January 2013 and has been renewed in Decision 1049/2012 of the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH).

The company performs its trading activities to mitigate its business risks and has no contractual relationship with consumers.

In order to inform consumers about the market, the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority created and operates the web application called the Energy Fee Calculator - available athttps://eka.mekh.hu- and makes the offers of electricity traders comparable to consumers.

The electricity of Mátra ensures its competitiveness in the Hungarian power market with the implemented projects and investments.

Thanks to these, the short- and long-term benefits are:

  • a predictable, import-independent fuel base without procurement, market, transportation and political risks,
  • CO2 neutral green electricity production with biomass co-incineration,
  • with declining costs in proportion to utilization,
  • controllable performance and system reserve well adapted to the needs of the electricity system,
  • which was further increased through the installation of gas turbines,
  • predictable prices in the long run.

The aim of our company is to produce economically, using all available capacities as much as possible, to provide the people living in the area with employment opportunities through our experience and contacts gained in the liberalized market, and to provide the companies established in our industrial park with electricity at competitive price.

We carry out our activities according to Amendment No. 7 of the Producer General Business Rules approved by Decision 1148/2022 of the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulation (MEKH).

Trading of natural gas

Our company obtained its natural gas trading authorisation in Decision 796/2011 and H1639/2021 of the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory (MEKH) for the free market sale of unused natural gas, the optimization of the exploitation of natural gas based on the fulfilment of its contractual obligations, and the reduction of its risks. Its primary activity does not include the supply to users.

In view of the fact that MVM Mátra Energia Zrt. does not carry out natural gas trading activities, it does not supply users, and the Office maintains its license - based on the licensee's application - in accordance with H768/2022 exempted him from the obligation to draw up Business Rules by a resolution.
